How the Amazon FBA fees work in 2026

Selling on FBA means paying four separate charges, and they are calculated on different bases — which is why adding them up in your head goes wrong.

1. Referral fee — a percentage of the sale

The referral fee applies to the total sale price, including any shipping you charge the buyer. It is set by category and has a minimum of $0.30 on most categories, $1.00 on handmade and $2.00 on jewellery.

CategoryReferral fee
Most categories (Home & Kitchen, Toys, Sports, Office, Tools, Pet, Baby)15%
Computers & Consumer Electronics8%
Automotive & Powersports, Industrial & Scientific12%
Tyres10%
Clothing & Accessories17%
Watches16%
Jewellery20%
Beauty, Health & Personal Care8% up to $10, 15% above
Grocery & Gourmet8% up to $15, 15% above
Amazon Device Accessories45%

The tiered categories are where sellers get caught. A $9.99 beauty product pays 8%; the same product priced at $10.99 pays 15% on the whole amount, not just the portion above $10. That single dollar of price can cost you more margin than the dollar adds.

2. FBA fulfilment fee — a flat charge per unit

This is what Amazon charges to pick, pack and ship your item, and it is set by size tier and weight rather than by price.

Size tier / weightApprox. fulfilment fee
Small standard, up to 4 oz$3.06
Small standard, 4–8 oz$3.30
Small standard, 8–12 oz$3.50
Small standard, 12–16 oz$3.65
Large standard, under 8 oz$3.95
Large standard, 8–16 oz$4.40
Large standard, 1–2 lb$5.20
Large standard, 2–3 lb$5.65
Small oversize, up to 70 lb$9.73+

Notice the pattern: the fee roughly doubles between a 4 oz unit and a 2 lb unit, even though the product price may be identical. This is the single biggest reason two sellers listing the same product at the same price end up with completely different margins.

The 2026 surcharge most sellers miss. From 17 April 2026 Amazon applies a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on FBA fulfilment fees in the US and Canada. It is charged on the fulfilment fee, not your sale price — so a $4.75 fee carries about $0.17 extra. Small per unit, but it is applied to every unit you ship and Amazon has not announced an end date. This calculator includes it automatically.

3. Monthly storage

Storage is charged per cubic foot per month and roughly triples in the fourth quarter. Standard size runs about $0.87 per cubic foot from January to September and about $2.40 in October to December. Inventory held beyond 365 days attracts an aged inventory surcharge around $6.90 per cubic foot.

Storage is not the fee that kills a product — it is the fee that kills a product you forgot about. Slow-moving inventory converts a small monthly charge into a permanent tax on your cash.

4. Advertising

Advertising is no longer optional on Amazon. Across most categories sellers now put 15–25% of revenue into Sponsored Products, and organic ranking tends to decay within about 60 days without spend. Treat ad cost as a line item in the product's economics, not a marketing decision you make later.

The margin trap: why your estimate is usually optimistic

Industry surveys consistently find that a large share of Amazon sellers cannot estimate their own profit margin to within five percentage points. The reason is structural — the fees sit on four different bases (sale price, size and weight, cubic feet, ad spend) and two of them change with the calendar. Doing that arithmetic mentally, every time you consider a new product, is how mispriced inventory gets bought.

Your buy price is the only number in this model you can negotiate. Every fee is fixed by Amazon. That is why sourcing discipline beats pricing tactics over a year.

Reading the results

  • Net profit per unit — what you keep after every cost in the model. This is the number that pays you.
  • Margin — net profit divided by sale price. Most sellers aim for 15–20% or better.
  • ROI on cost — net profit divided by what you spent to get the unit (cost plus inbound). This is the number that decides how fast your cash compounds.
  • Break-even price — the lowest price at which the sale stops losing money. Useful before a promotion, not after.
  • Amazon's cut — the total of all Amazon charges as a share of the sale price.

Amazon FBA fees — FAQ

How much does Amazon take per sale in 2026?

For most categories the referral fee is 15% of the total sale price including shipping. Electronics and computers are 8%, automotive and industrial supplies 12%, clothing 17% and jewellery 20%. On top of that you pay a per-unit FBA fulfilment fee, a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on that fulfilment fee, and monthly storage.

What is the 3.5% FBA fuel and logistics surcharge?

Effective 17 April 2026 Amazon added a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on FBA fulfilment fees in the US and Canada. It is calculated on the fulfilment fee, not the sale price, so on a $4.75 fulfilment fee it adds roughly $0.17 per unit.

What margin should an Amazon FBA product have?

Many sellers target a 15–20% net margin after all fees, and a return on cost of 30% or more. Below roughly 10% net margin a product has little room to absorb a price cut, a return spike or a storage surcharge.

Is Amazon FBA still worth it in 2026?

It depends entirely on the size and weight of your product. FBA economics are best on small, light, fast-moving units where the fulfilment fee stays under about $4 and inventory turns over quickly. Heavy, slow-moving products are where storage and fulfilment fees quietly erase the margin.

Does the referral fee apply to shipping I charge the buyer?

Yes. The referral fee is calculated on the total sale amount, which includes any shipping or handling you charge. Building shipping into the item price and charging separately cost you the same in fees.

Why does my dashboard show a different fulfilment fee?

Fulfilment fees depend on the exact dimensions and shipping weight Amazon measures, not the weight you declare. Dimensional weight can push a light but bulky item into a higher tier, and the fee changes with size tier boundaries. Override the field with the figure from your own fee preview report.
