eBay Fee Calculator
eBay's final value fee is charged on the item price plus shipping plus the sales tax the buyer paid — and you never see that tax. Enter the sale and find out what actually lands in your account.
eBay's 2026 fee structure, in plain terms
Since eBay moved to managed payments, the final value fee is all-in: there is no separate PayPal or card-processing charge stacked on top. What catches sellers out is what the fee is calculated on, and the tiered rates in higher-value categories.
| Category | Rate | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Most categories | 13.6% | First $7,500, then 2.35% |
| Books, Movies & Music | 15.3% | First $7,500, then 2.35% |
| Jewellery | 15% or 9% | Whole total — 15% at $5,000 or below, 9% above |
| Watches | 15% / 6.5% / 3% | Bands: first $1,000, then to $7,500, then above |
| Women's Handbags | 15% or 9% | Whole total — 15% at $2,000 or below, 9% above |
| Trading Cards, Comics & Coins | 13.25% | First $7,500 |
| Athletic Shoes listed at $150 or more | 8% | No per-order fee |
| Guitars & Basses | 6.7% | First $7,500 |
| Heavy Equipment | 3% | First $15,000, then 0.5% |
The three costs sellers underestimate
1. The fee includes shipping and sales tax. This is the single most common source of surprise. If a buyer pays $50 for an item, $8 shipping and $4.06 tax, eBay's fee is charged on $62.06 — not $50. You never receive the tax; eBay collects and remits it. You still pay commission on it. Separating shipping into a separate charge does not shelter it either.
2. The per-order fee punishes cheap items. Orders of $10 or less pay $0.30; everything above pays $0.40. On a $6 sale that flat fee alone is 5% of your revenue before the final value fee even applies. Low-priced inventory on eBay is often unprofitable for exactly this reason.
3. Some categories re-rate the whole sale at a threshold. eBay does not always charge the higher rate only on the portion above the threshold. In women's handbags and jewellery, the rate applies to the entire total: 15% if the total is at or below the threshold, and 9% if it is above. A $1,999 handbag pays about $299.85 in fees, while a $2,001 handbag pays about $180.09 — the more expensive bag is cheaper to sell. The jewellery threshold works the same way at $5,000, and watches use three bands instead of two.
Is an eBay Store worth it?
A Basic Store runs about $21.95 a month and drops the final value fee on most categories from 13.6% to 12.7% on the first $2,500 per item, with a larger block of free listings. On roughly $3,000 of monthly sales, the 0.9 point reduction is worth about $27 — already more than the subscription. Below that level, the maths usually doesn't work. Stack it with Top Rated Plus and a $100 sale's fee falls from about $13.60 to about $11.43.
What to do with the result
- If the effective fee rate is above 15%, you are probably in a high-rate category or paying a Promoted Listings rate that your margin can't carry.
- If profit is thin on a low-priced item, bundle it. Selling three $8 items in one order shares one per-order fee instead of paying three.
- Before raising a price near a threshold, run it through this calculator at both prices. The cliff is real.
eBay fees — FAQ
How much does eBay take per sale in 2026?
For most categories, a final value fee of about 13.6% on the total sale amount up to $7,500, then 2.35% above that, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above $10. Business sellers also pay a 0.35% regulatory operating fee. Payment processing is already included in the final value fee.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total the buyer paid, which includes the item price, any shipping and handling charges, and sales tax. You never receive the sales tax, but you still pay the fee on it. This is the most common reason a payout is lower than expected.
Is an eBay Store subscription worth it?
A Basic Store costs about $21.95 a month and lowers the final value fee on most categories from 13.6% to 12.7% on the first $2,500 per item, plus more free listings. On roughly $3,000 of monthly sales the 0.9 point difference is about $27, which already exceeds the subscription cost. Below that volume, it usually is not worth it.
What is Top Rated Plus and how much does it save?
Top Rated Plus is a badge for sellers who meet eBay's handling-time and return requirements. Qualifying listings get a 10% discount on the final value fee, which takes a $100 sale from about $13.60 to about $12.24.
Do private sellers pay fees on eBay?
In the US, individuals selling occasional personal items pay 0% final value fees in most categories. If you buy to resell, you are a business seller and pay the full schedule plus the 0.35% regulatory operating fee. This calculator defaults to the business-seller rates.
Sources & last checked. Rates reflect eBay's published US selling fees and store fees as of late 2026: 13.6% standard final value fee up to $7,500 then 2.35%, category exceptions as listed, per-order fee of $0.30/$0.40, 0.35% regulatory operating fee for business sellers, and 1.65% international surcharge.
