StockX vs eBay for sneakers: fees, and what authentication costs you
StockX's 9% seller fee reads as cheaper than eBay's 13.6%, and for expensive pairs it is. But StockX also charges 3% processing and a $5 shipping fee, which pushed its effective rate above eBay's on anything under about $236 when the fees changed in March 2026.
Three fees, not one
StockX charges a 9% transaction fee at Level 1, dropping through 8.5%, 8% and 7.5% to 7% at Level 5 as quarterly volume grows. On top of that sits a 3% payment processing fee and, since March 2026, a flat $5 shipping fee on US standard sales — up from $4. On a $180 pair that is $16.20 + $5.40 + $5.00 = $26.60, or 14.8%.
eBay charges 13.6% final value fee, a $0.40 per-order fee and 0.35% regulatory fee. On the same $180 pair that is $25.51 — but you keep the pair until it sells, ship it yourself, and handle any return.
| Platform | Fees | Fee rate | Net per sale | vs best |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StockX | $26.60 | 14.8% | $63.40 | — |
| eBay | $25.51 | 14.2% | $56.49 | -$6.91 |
Worked at a $180.00 sale, $90.00 unit cost and $8.00 of shipping you pay, general merchandise. Change any of those and the order can flip — that is what the calculator above is for.
The crossover moved to about $236
Run the two fee stacks against each other. StockX costs 12% of the sale plus $5; eBay costs 13.95% plus $0.40 when the buyer pays the label. Setting them equal gives a crossover at roughly $236. Below that eBay is cheaper, above it StockX is, and the gap widens by 1.95 cents on every dollar.
That is a big shift. Before March 2026 StockX cost 11% plus $4 and the crossover sat near $122; the combination of a one-point fee rise and a one-dollar shipping rise nearly doubled the price at which StockX becomes the cheaper venue. If your inventory sits in the $100–$230 band, the change moved you from the winning side to the losing side without you doing anything.
The exception is who pays postage. If you are posting the pair yourself on eBay at $5, eBay's total cost becomes 13.95% plus $5.40 and StockX wins at almost any price, because that $5 is already inside StockX's number. Set the shipping field to 0 to model the usual sneaker listing where the buyer pays the label.
What the fee does not measure
StockX is a bid-ask market. You list at a price, buyers bid, and the spread is visible. That transparency compresses margins — everyone can see the last sale — but it also means you can price to the market instead of guessing. eBay rewards presentation: better photos, a story, a bundle. The same pair often sells for more on eBay and more reliably on StockX.
Level matters on StockX, and more than it used to. Level 2 (8.5%) needs 12 sales and $1,500 in a quarter; Level 5 (7%) needs 800 sales and $100,000. The two-point spread between Level 1 and Level 5 is worth $3.60 on a $180 pair — $3,600 across a thousand pairs, which is a bigger lever than any pricing decision you will make in a week.
StockX vs eBay — FAQ
Does StockX charge less than eBay?
Only above about $236 now. StockX costs 12% of the sale plus a flat $5 (9% transaction fee, 3% processing, $5 shipping), while eBay costs 13.95% plus $0.40 when the buyer pays the label. Below $236 eBay is cheaper; above it StockX is and the gap widens by 1.95 cents per dollar. Before StockX's March 2026 fee change the crossover was near $122.
What is StockX's seller fee in 2026?
9% at Level 1, then 8.5%, 8%, 7.5% and 7% at Levels 2 to 5. Levels reset quarterly: Level 2 needs 12 sales and $1,500, Level 5 needs 800 sales and $100,000. On top of the transaction fee StockX charges 3% payment processing and a $5 shipping fee on US standard sales, with a $5 minimum seller fee.
Do I pay shipping when selling on StockX?
Yes, and since March 2026 it is a flat $5 on US standard sales rather than $4. You ship the item to StockX's authentication centre; the buyer pays a separate shipping fee to receive it after authentication. If the item fails authentication it is returned to you at your expense and the sale is cancelled.
Can I sell sneakers on eBay without authentication?
For most pairs under $100, yes — eBay does not require authentication. Above $100, sneakers are eligible for eBay's Authenticity Guarantee, where the pair is shipped to a third-party authenticator before reaching the buyer. The cost is paid by the buyer in most cases, but the extra transit time affects your handling metrics.
Which is better for used sneakers?
eBay. StockX only accepts deadstock — new, unworn, in the original box. Anything with wear, yellowing or missing packaging will fail authentication. eBay has no such requirement and a deep market for worn pairs, so for a used rotation eBay is the only one of the two that will accept the listing at all.
